Brief History of the College of Nursing

Initially, SLU only served the pre-nursing students. In 1973, a Department of Nursing was put up under the administrative supervision of the College of Natural Sciences under the deanship of Rev. Fr. Gerard Braeckman.

Eventually in 1976, the College of Nursing was weaned from the College of Natural Sciences when the SLU Board of Trustees passed a resolution creating the College of Nursing. The college opened its BSN program to 205 generic students and 96 BSN supplemental candidates.

The College of Nursing was created with the belief that nursing education should be directed towards the "development of professional competent nurses with potentials for leadership and imbibed with the Christian spirit of service, social insight, commitment and humanitarian services." Because of this philosophy, admission to the college was quite selective and limited which accounted for the academic and clinical excellence of its graduates.
