July 16. "A geological mystery."

We bask in the achievements of science and technology. With the latest developments in communications, medicine, and engineering, we feel secure and confident that all will be well. We can forecast the weather and predict the directions of typhoons, including tsunamis. But there is one mystery in the world that continues to baffle science: the phenomenon of earthquakes. There is no predicting when an earthquake is going to strike. With confidence in human creativity and with unwavering faith in God, we remain sober amidst the forces of nature. We remember today in prayer the victims of the 1990 earthquake that hit Baguio.
