“Gentleness and patience are indispensable virtues,” says Th. Verbist to his missionaries. Why gentleness? Why patience? Given the context of the times when Th. Verbist and his missionaries were starting their work on Mongolia, we can understand the difficulties involved in living in a foreign land. For one, how can a missionary proclaim the Good News if he does not know the language of the people to whom he has been sent to evangelize? The case of adjusting to people’s different cultures is another matter of prime consideration.
