Saint Louis University is hosting the Research Publication Mentoring project, Kabadang 2023: P.R.O.M.I.S.E. (Publication Refinement and Optimization for Maximum International Scientific Excellence) initiated by the Commission on Higher Education – Cordillera Administrative Region (CHED-CAR) from 05 to 07 September 2023, at the Fr. Francis Gevers Hall, Saint Louis University (SLU). The intensive research mentoring workshop focuses on mentoring researchers toward publication.
SLU is one of the seventeen Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from CAR and Region 1 in the project. The other participating HEIs are Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology, Apayao State College, Baguio Central University, Benguet State University, Cordillera Career Development College, Ifugao State University, Kalinga State University, King’s College of the Philippines, Lyceum-Northwestern University, Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, St. Louis College of Bulanao, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, Urdaneta City University, Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation, and Pangasinan State University.
In line with the project objectives, Dr. Demetrio Anduyan, Jr., CHED-CAR Director IV, stressed that “In the realm of the academia, research is the lifeblood that propels innovation, drives progress, and advances our understanding of the world. Research does not exist in isolation. Its true impact is realized when effectively utilized and disseminated through publication.” It is in this context that Kabadang 2023 is conducted.
“Kabadang” is a Cordilleran term that means “mentor”. As the name implies, this is a partnership between HEIs of CAR towards mentoring of their instructors/teachers and staff on research publications.
There are trainers and mentors from different learning institutions who have extensive experience in research publication and have trained for several studies both locally and internationally.
The Senior Publication Speakers and Mentors of Kabadang 2023 are:
- Dr. Erlinda Palaganas: “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Research Publication” and “Research Publication Guidelines: Understanding Rigorous Process and Techniques of Research Publication”
- Dr. Leah Abayao: “Ethics in Research Publication”
- Dr. Mark Preston Lopez: “Strengthening Research Literature and Related Studies”
- Dr. Jun Camara: “Practical Angle Writing in Academic Publications”
- Dr. Thelma Palaoag: “Digital Research Tool Kits”
- Dr. Roscinto Lumbres, Senior Publication Mentor
- Dr. Jimmy Guisdan Catanes: Project Leader and Senior Publication Mentor
The Junior Publication Mentors are Dr. Willow Pangket, Dr. Epiphania Magwilang, Dr. Lichelyn Nasungan, Mr. Luther Castillo, MAT, Dr. Jude Tayaben, Dr. Jennifer Garingan-Dait, Dr. Pinky Larcelle Gas-Ib, and Dr. Arnel Ocay.
The main objectives of Kabadang are as follows:
- Foster Research Culture: Kabadang aimed to cultivate a research-oriented culture within HEIs by motivating and guiding faculty members to engage in research activities.
- Enhance Research Capacities: The project aimed to enhance the research capacities of HEI staff by providing them with training, workshops, and resources to improve their research skills, methodologies, and academic writing.
- Mentorship for Publication: Kabadang focused on providing mentorship to researchers, guiding them through the publication process. This included assistance in manuscript preparation, data analysis, and publication submission.
- Dissemination of Research Findings: The project aimed to promote the dissemination of research findings through conferences, symposia, and academic publications, thereby contributing to the advancement of knowledge in various fields.
Kabadang is expected to be a successive event practice that helps to ensure continuity of researchers and mentors in the Cordillera as well-equipped and globally empowered educators in higher education.
The program is in line with “AHEAD” (Academy for Higher Education Faculty Members Advancement and Development) initiative of CHED-CAR, which promotes the development and progression of faculty members in HEIs.
