Saint Louis University’s School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) has marked a year of providing vital support to students during their most stressful times. Since its launch in September 2023, the “KuSEAna Project,” SLU-SEA’s version of a soup kitchen, has served over 500 students facing food insecurity during examination periods. This initiative, aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the CICM’s advocacy for justice, offers a much-needed helping hand when students need it most.
Combating Hunger, Boosting Student Success
Examination periods can be daunting for students, and the added pressure of food insecurity can significantly impact their performance. KuSEAna steps in to address this very concern. By offering free, nutritious meals during exams, the project ensures students have the fuel they need to focus on their studies. This directly contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) highlighting the connection between food security and academic achievement.
More Than Just Meals: A Community of Support
The impact of KuSEAna goes beyond simply filling empty stomachs. The project fosters a strong sense of community within the SEA family. SEA Faculty, staff and student organizations from all walks of life volunteer their resources and time to prepare and serve meals, creating a warm and welcoming space where students facing challenges can connect and receive support. This collaborative spirit embodies SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), showcasing the power of working together for a common purpose.
Upholding the CICM’s Values
Inspired by the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM)’s dedication to social justice, KuSEAna ensures that no student goes hungry during exams. This commitment to assisting those in need reflects the core values of the CICM and reinforces the university’s mission of fostering a caring and inclusive environment.
In just one year, the KuSEAna Project has demonstrably improved the lives of hundreds of students. By tackling food insecurity and promoting a supportive community, KuSEAna paves the way for a brighter future for Saint Louis University, aligning perfectly with the SDGs and the CICM’s vision.
