The Saint Louis University (SLU) Finance cluster, in collaboration with the Data Privacy Office, conducted a seminar on “Building a Culture of Data Privacy in Schools” held at the AVR of the University Libraries Building, Charles Vath Bldg., Baguio City in the morning of 9 May 2024.
The seminar gathered school administrators from private and Catholic schools affiliated with the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) in Baguio and Benguet to foster a deeper understanding of data privacy and cybersecurity within educational settings.
Prof. Andrew Macalma, SLU University Registrar, welcomed the attendees and shared some of his best practices and strategies in handling student data, emphasizing the importance of ethical data management practices and the role of educators in safeguarding student information.
The esteemed speakers, also known as the “Guardians of Data,” from the SLU Data Protection Office provided invaluable insights. SLU Data Protection Officer Dr. Cecilia Mercado provided a comprehensive overview of the Data Privacy Act of 2012, establishing a solid groundwork for comprehending data privacy laws and regulations. Ms. Maria Concepcion Clemente, serving as both faculty and Assistant Data Protection Officer, intricately explored the cultivation of a Data Privacy Culture, stressing the significance of shared responsibility in preserving the confidentiality of sensitive information. Furthermore, Mr. Willy Olivete, SLU Information Security Administrator, discussed the Cyber Security Culture, advocating for proactive strategies to mitigate risks and uphold data integrity.
As the organizer of the event, the Finance Cluster expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic participation and engagement of all attendees, as evidenced through the lively Question and Answer portion of the program.
To cap off the enlightening session, the guests were taken on a campus tour, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region through SLU’s Museum of Igorot Culture and Arts, as well as the wealth of knowledge found in our University Libraries.

By prioritizing data privacy and security within educational institutions, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 9 ( Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), including the CICM Advocacies on Justice and Peace, are further strengthened in the academic community.
