Student Law Practitioners from Saint Louis University’s (SLU) School of Law (SOL) took part in the 34th National Convention held by The Association of Law Students of the Philippines, Inc. (ALSP). The National Covention and Membership Renewal at Dynasty Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City (Mindanao) with the theme “LAMBIGIT – Fostering Community Ties Towards Creating Socially Conscious and Well-Equipped Contemporary Law Students” on 13 and 14 April 2024.
The National Convention was a 2-day event for academic and internal synergy i.e., elections and policy-proposal. “Lambigit” in the Bisaya language means “to involve”—a purpose shared to this generation of law students and the members of the judiciary in understanding communities at the grassroots.
There were over 23 in-person participating law schools and 18 law schools in virtual attendance with a total delegation of 218 law students. Significantly, it was attended by Law Student Governments through their representative-officers who casted their votes during the elections for the National and Regional Boards and joined in the discourse on ALSP Developments and Proposals for Amendments. However, special elections shall be held for select Regional Governor positions, including North Luzon, and the National President position. DLUSA SOL vies to run as North Luzon’s Governor in the incoming special elections.
Plenary discussions focused on leadership and community orated by Municipal Mayor Hon. Jayfrancis Bago, J.D. on “Lawyering in Public Service”, “Best Practices of School- based Legal Clinics” by Atty. Joanah C. Alinog-Discocor, and “Jain Decongestion Program and Advocacy” by Retired Judge Atty. Ma. Corazon Llanderal. New developments and ethics in law practice was also delivered by Atty. Albert Daba in his topic-discussion “The Role of AI in Lawyering”.
The rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere of Cagayan de Oro was conducive for the insightful discussions, fruitful exchanges of ideas, and memorable experiences from the Convention. Importantly, the network established with other Law Student Governments, law schools, and ALSP benchmarks new opportunities for the law student community.
