Team 0_day_SLU from Saint Louis University (SLU) landed in 5th place in the recently concluded Trend Micro University Capture the Flag (uCTF) Competition. After the final round of competition which was held online, the five top teams who were ranked based on their total scores were selected.Team 0_day_SLU was among the five teams recognized and given special awards during the Decode 2024 event which was held on 10 September 2024 at Edsa Shangri-La, Manila. Team members of 0_day_SLU are Dave Gabrielle Dalit, Paul Ivan Dimacali, William Sylester Gan-gan, Alkaid Pading, and Aeika Sajulla, and coached by Mr. Randy Domantay.
Ten (10) teams composed of BSIT and BSCS students of the SOU School of Accountancy, Management, Computing and Information Studies (SAMCIS) initially made it to the top 30 teams who competed during the final round of the competition which was held online last 03 September 2024. There were a total of 187 teams from 70 different colleges and universities all over the Philippines who competed in this annual prestigious cybersecurity event held online last 30 August 2024.
Rising as champion was team Cyberfoxes Aether from Holy Angels University. In 2nd place was team Cyberfoxes Spades from Holy Angel University while on 3rd place was team CWildhats from Cebu Institute of Technology. Finally, on 4th Place was team Pwngenius from Mindanao State University.
Trend Micro uCTF is a yearly competition designed for teams of college students under the age of 25 who compete to solve various cybersecurity problems in order to find and capture flags. Flags are typically hidden in vulnerable systems and programs and teams of participants must use their skills in areas such as cryptography, reverse engineering, and web exploitation in order to uncover these flags. The uCTF Competition aims to encourage students to develop their skills and interests in information security in order to create a world that is aligned with Trend Micro’s values of making the exchange of digital information safe and secure for all.
Last June 2024, the same SLU team competed in the DICT-CAR HackforGov competition and emerged as the regional champion. They will represent the Cordillera Administrative Region in the upcoming national finals which will be held on October 2024 in Manila.
