The Project Daily Bread (PDB) was conceived in response to the cases that have come to the attention of the Center for Counseling and Wellness (formerly the Guidance Center) regarding students who experience involuntary hunger. The term “Project Daily Bread” was coined from the Lord’s prayer taught by Jesus Christ to His disciples. Mrs. Triceayn Marie Prestousa, a former Guidance Counselor and currently the Dean for Office of the Student Affairs and Services, initiated the project and initially presented the concept of PDB to the Guidance Center. She said that the PDB could provide decent lunch meals for identified students who will be screened basically for involuntary hunger due to poverty.
Since 2011 up to this Academic Year 2024-2025, the Center for Counseling and Wellness in partnership with the Office of the Student Affairs and Services, the Human Resource and Development Office and canteen concessionaires have extended food scholarships to assist students who are suffering from involuntary hunger.
Project Daily Bread also is SLU’s response to SDG goal number 2 of ending hunger. As SLU’s mission ad intra, this project targets CICM advocacy on justice and Indigenous People’s advocacies by providing the necessary assistance to students who are struggling financially. As a result, students served under the Project Daily Bread were able to successfully finish their college degrees and are able to succeed in their career path. Over the years, Project Daily Bread is able to serve 1,068 students. For the academic year 2023-2024, PDB was able to serve a total of ninety two (92) students. Sixty nine (69) students from the college department and twenty three (23) students from the Basic Education department. And in the first semester of AY 2024-2025, PDB is serving thirty four (34) students.
