Mr. Aldrin Sally, a third year Bachelor of Multimedia Arts student of Saint Louis University (SLU), achieved an impressive milestone by winning 3rd place in the Digital Photography category of the 57th Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC). The award ceremony took place on 15 November 2024, at the Ayala Museum in Makati City.
This prestigious competition, celebrating the creativity and innovation of young Filipino artists, attracted thousands of entries from across the nation.
Mr. Sally’s photograph entry, “Tayaw,” captures Igorot men performing a traditional dance showcasing their rich cultural heritage. The image highlights their intricately crafted backpacks, headbands, and synchronized movements, all of which reflect their deep commitment to preserving ancient customs. The “Tayaw,” characterized by dancers raising their arms, symbolizes the Igorot’s profound connection to nature and spirituality.
Mr. Sally shared his inspiration for the piece, expressing a desire to show those unfamiliar with the Igorots that they do much more than dance. “We are dedicated to preserving, protecting, and honoring the rich cultural legacy passed down by our ancestors,” he noted. This sentiment resonates deeply within his work, aiming to bridge understanding and appreciation for Igorot culture.
The Shell NSAC encourages students to express their perspectives on significant societal issues, inspiring positive change through art. Mr. Sally’s achievement showcases his talent and underscores the invaluable support and mentorship provided by the faculty of SLU’s Bachelor of Multimedia Arts program encouraging students’ creative exploration.
