A colorful display of creativity and expression has taken root at Saint Louis University (SLU) Talged Center, as participants delved into the art of flower arrangement during the second Matchstick Session titled “Expressions of Life through Flower Arrangement”. Shifting from the aroma of coffee to the delicate fragrance of blooms, the center fostered a space for personal growth through artistic exploration.
On 19 March 2025, the Talged Center hosted a two-session workshop, each accommodating 12 participants. The workshop ran from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., providing a focused and therapeutic experience. As a tradition, the Matchstick Session began with the symbolic lighting of matchstick, igniting the creative spark within each attendee.
In quoting Gérard de Nerval’s reflection, “Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature,” Constance D. Florentine – a former SLU faculty member, DTI-accredited livelihood trainer, and florist – guided the participants through the fundamental principles of floristry. Sharing her love for the craft, she demonstrated techniques for selecting complementary flowers, balancing colors, and creating harmonious arrangements. The collaborative experience fostered a sense of community and learning, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

As the workshop progressed, participants created their floral designs that began with selecting flowers, trimming stems, and carefully positioning each element to create their decorative arrangement. Each piece was a unique expression of the participant’s vision, most of which were inspired from what the combination of colors made them feel. This hands-on experience directly contributed to SDG 4: Quality Education, providing practical skills and nurturing artistic development.
In a world often defined by rapid change and digital distractions, the SLU Talged Center’s Matchstick Session series stands as a testament to the power of slowing down, connecting with nature, and expressing the beauty within. It is a reminder that even in the most fleeting moments, creativity can bloom, leaving a lasting impression.
The immersive workshop also promoted SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by offering a therapeutic and stress-relieving activity, allowing participants to connect with nature and express their emotions through artistic creation.
