On 7 August 2025, the Prince Bernhard Gym at the Saint Louis University (SLU) Main Campus became a hall of gratitude and celebration as the Louisian community paid tribute to 44 retirees and 174 service awardees during Panangdayaw 2025.
The momentous occasion began with a Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Emery Mwako, CICM, SLU Vice President for Mission and Identity, as a thanksgiving and reminder for everyone to keep their lights shining and to share their light to others. In the homily that echoed the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, Fr. Mwako said, “We understand life’s cyclical nature, reminding us that life unfolds in seasons, each with its own purpose—just like the years of dedicated service many of you have offered. May we continue to support each other, celebrate each other’s successes, and walk in faith.”

Afterward, a lively performance of “Ang Sarap, Ang Saya Maging Pilipino” by the SLU Dance Troupe took place that celebrated the spirit of the Filipino soul that defines the Louisian community.

University President Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD gave his message to the retirees and service awardees and expressed his sincerest gratitude for their commitment and service to the Louisian community. “This is more than a personal milestone—it is a celebration of dedication, of excellence, and of the firm backbone of our institution…In doing so, we live out our core virtue: Missio et Excellentia. May this tribute not only recognize your contributions but also inspire others to pursue the same commitment and integrity in their own work. Let this event, among many other things, remind you of SLU’s continued commitment to its employees’ welfare with the thought that you are all prime resources of our university,” he said.

The awarding ceremony commenced with the 10- and 15-year service awardees, presented by Fr. Sales and SLU Vice President for Administration, Atty. Shellah Yzanne P. Merced. Attendees applauded as each honoree received recognition on the stage, creating an uplifting atmosphere that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

A cheerful and refreshing intermission number then followed featuring the SLU Glee Club’s rendition of the song “Memories,” that fostered reminiscence of milestones and moments.

Shortly after, the program moved into the presentation of the 20-year and 25-year service awards, led by Fr. Sales and SLU Vice President for Academic Affairs, Felina P. Espique, PhD. Each awardee stepped onto the stage with joyful smiles, greeted by warm admiration for their years of service. This acknowledgment flowed into a thought-provoking yet impactful monologue titled “Sa Pahina ng Panlapi,” which was performed by Tanghalang SLU.

The ceremony continued with the awarding of the 30-, 35-, and 40-year service honorees, led by Fr. Sales and SLU Vice President for Finance, Roberto M. Arguelles, PhD. The honorees received cheers of appreciation and deep respect being among the University’s most committed employees for their decades of unwavering commitment and dedication.

SLU Glee Club once more captivated the audience with a powerful performance of “Hentakan Jiwa,” which means “The Beat of the Soul” that energized the guests with strong beats and dynamic vocals.

Following this, the retirees were individually called to the stage and honored with commemorative retirement statuettes and medals in recognition of their invaluable years of service and their lasting impact on the Louisian community. The gesture was both symbolic and heartfelt, serving as a testament to a lifetime of meaningful contribution.

In response and on behalf of the SLU retirees, Atty. Leilanee Dasig-Quanguey, from the SLU School of Law (SOL), delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude and reflection. “Let me extend our Panangdayaw to Saint Louis University for trusting us enough to have been hired as mentors, as hospital workers, as non-academic employees, as it brought us a lot of blessings and limitless opportunities. Saint Louis University, you have filled our cups and gave us a life of meaningful pursuits,” she expressed.

A performance of “Minsan” by the SLU Dance Troupe radiated energy and high spirits as the event came to an end. The singing of the SLU Hymn, led by the SLU Glee Club, strengthened the Louisian spirit and pride within the attendees.

Afterward, Dr. Espique called on the guests to raise a glass and toast to the retirees, sparking a series of joyous cheers among the guests for the unity and shared chapters within the university. To conclude the event and commence the dinner, a prayer was led by Rev. Fr. Emanuel Enjang Pranatal, CICM.
The Panangdayaw was an avenue of honor and celebration and another reminder of the University’s staunch commitment to the welfare of its greatest resources— the Louisian-employees. (Article by UIO and Ydelvess Morales, UIO Volunteer | Photos by UIO and Kyla Moreno, UIO Volunteer)
