Saint Louis University (SLU) is deepening its commitment to protecting the environment and promoting biodiversity. In partnership with Project Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA), SLU took part in the release of dozens of sea turtle hatchlings along the shores of San Juan, La Union on 24 January 2026.

As a key part of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) program called “Marine Stewardship and Climate Resilience: A SLU–CURMA Coastal Mission,” this project forms part of SLU’s broader efforts to advocate for the environment. It transforms the coastline into a living classroom where students and faculty engage with the delicate “Life Below Water” (SDG 14). By safeguarding these endangered species from poaching and habitat loss, the collaboration highlights the pressing need for local action amidst global climate challenges.

Initiated by University President Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD, and Vice President for Mission and Identity Fr. Emery Ebumea Mwako, CICM, this mission brings the CICM advocacy for the Integrity of Creation to life.

By promoting ecological awareness, the program hopes to create a sustainable future where the community acts as protectors of biodiversity. Through these hands-on conservation efforts, SLU continues to connect academic achievement with social responsibility, ensuring that the commitment to climate resilience translates into meaningful actions within the community.
