Through the invitation of the Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines, Inc. (ALSWDOPI), Dr. Mary Grace P. Carrido, Director of the SLU External Relations, Media, Communications and Alumni Affairs Office; and Prof. Ylona Bayod, Professor of Psychology, were among the resource speakers in the “Training on Enabling Barangay Officials and Other Duty Bearers on Handling Family-Related Causes” held on February 13 to 15, 2023 at the Diamond Ballroom, Hotel Supreme, Baguio City. The training was held in connection with ALSWDOPI’s continuing commitment to improving the capacities of its important intermediaries, particularly at the barangay level.
Among the topics of the said training include “Women in Difficult Circumstances” and “Children’s Welfare and Protection,” which provided participants an adequate preparation to be responsive to the needs of their constituents. In this light, Dr. Carrido discussed the topic, “Understanding Gender-based Violence.” Prof. Bayod, on the other hand, gave a talk on “Risk and Vulnerability Factors that Contribute to Child Abuse and Neglect.” The sessions strengthen the ideals of CICM, specifically in advocating Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation and Sustainable Development Goals 10, Reduced Inequalities.
Other topics discussed include “Understanding Gender,” “The different types of violence committed against women and children in the Philippines,” and “Upholding LGBTQ+ Rights against Discrimination and Violence.” These 21st-century discourses align with SDG Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
ALSWDOPI’s training improves duty-bearers’ competencies at the barangay level on how they could further improve the delivery of services in their workplace, which affirms SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals and the CEAP JEEPGY value of Engaged Citizenship.
