In a bid to advance its commitment to sustainable development, Saint Louis University (SLU) Basic Education School (BEdS) is taking proactive steps to integrate environmental education into its curriculum. As part of this initiative, the Science 9 classes participated in a seminar on 9 October 2023 that was facilitated by Zero Waste Baguio Inc., Ms. Maria Olivia Villanueva Gregorio, about the applications of the fermentation process in composting. Ms. Gregorio, co-founder of the organization, shared her expertise on composting and offered actionable insights for both home and school settings.
This activity provides a prime opportunity for students to not only gain theoretical knowledge but also apply their learning to real-life situations, with a strong emphasis on practical, eco-conscious activities. The seminar was also graced by the President of the organization, Ms. Maria Buena Victoria Tenefrancia.
Central to this activity was the incorporation of the 5Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, and the often overlooked “Rot.” The 5th R, “Rot,” underscores the importance of organic waste decomposition in contributing to a sustainable environment. The informative session was conducted last 09 October 2023, and aimed at empowering students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to engage in composting, a pivotal aspect of the Zero Waste Movement. This initiative was part of the institution’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), notably SDG 13, which centers on climate change action. It reflects the United Nations’ call for collective and urgent action to combat climate change through emission regulation and the promotion of renewable energy solutions.
This seminar not only aligns with the institution’s vision but also demonstrates a united effort to safeguard our planet’s ecological integrity. With 260 Grade 9 students participating, and under the guidance of Mr. John Michael A. Guerzon, Grade 9 Science teacher, SLU is taking significant strides in nurturing environmentally responsible citizens who can make a positive impact on the world. Together, they are fostering a culture of environmental sustainability for a brighter and more resilient future.
