Dr. Racquel T. Chua-Barcelo, researcher and professor of Biology at the School of Nursing, Allied Health, and Biological Sciences (SONAHBS), was recognized as the 2023 Best Mentor in Health Research (Undergraduate Category) in Cordillera for her active participation and commitment to advancing healthcare knowledge. The documentation and utilization of traditional knowledge in promoting economic and culturally-important edible wild fruits for food security, urban garden plants, and indigenous medicinal plants for community healthcare are among her noteworthy contributions as a mentor to her students that have significantly benefited the local community.
As the current chair of the Plant Biology in the Biological Sciences Division of the National Research Council of the Philippines of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-NRCP), she envisions a healthy and sustainable future among Filipinos through inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations in plant research and innovation across the country using Science and Technology.
A plaque of recognition and cash award were given for her outstanding work and exemplary contribution during the Gawad Saliksik Pangkalusugan awarding ceremony with the theme: “Symphony of Wellness: Celebrating Excellence in Research and Development” held on 22 December 2023 at the Orchard Hotel, Baguio City. The ceremony was organized by the Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium, a multi-sectoral organization functioning as a regional partner agency of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).
Likewise, Saint Louis University (SLU) was given a plaque of appreciation for its active participation in the consortium as a member institution.
The search for Best Mentor in Health Research Award is conducted biennially to acknowledge and reward mentors in health research. To be eligible for nomination, the researcher must be a Filipino citizen with appropriate or relevant academic qualifications, actively engaged in health research activities, and mentoring students or colleagues.
SLU remains committed to its research initiatives that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Quality Education (SDG 4), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Life on Land (SDG 15), Peace Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). The CICM Advocacies of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation and Indigenous Peoples Apostolate are also upheld.
