In a bustling hub of intellect and competition, the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) of Saint Louis University (SLU) recently witnessed the culmination of its 30th Inter-Departmental Brain Collision (IDBC) on 13 March 2024, at the C-013 President’s Conference Room, Center for Culture and the Arts Building. Ten teams from various programs within SEA vied for the championship title. The event, organized by the School of Engineering and Architecture Honor Society (SEAHS), not only showcased the excellence and competence of SEA students but also highlighted the collaborative spirit and dedication nurtured within the institution.
As the tension mounted and excitement filled the air, teams representing different departments showcased their knowledge and critical thinking skills across various categories including Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Solid Mensuration, Differential and Integral Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Physics, Engineering Mechanics, General Information, and CICM. The competition was fierce, with each round presenting unique challenges to test the limits of the participants’ abilities.

BS Chemical Engineering Team A (BSChE – A) emerged as the back-to-back champions of the 30th IDBC, led by team captain Mark Angel P. Permato and coached by Engr. Jonalyn Kimpay. BSChE Team A displayed exceptional teamwork and resilience throughout the competition. Despite facing initial setbacks in the easy round, the team swiftly regained momentum and secured victory in both the moderate and difficult rounds, amassing an impressive total of 190 points.
Not to be outdone, BS Civil Engineering (BSCE) Team claimed the title of 1st Runner-up, with captain Kasler Dell O. Abansi leading the charge. Guided by the mentorship of Engr. Leandro McFarland, the team showcased exemplary problem-solving skills and determination, earning a total of 140 points.
Meanwhile, BSChE Team B showcased their tenacity and dedication, clinching the title of 2nd Runner-up under the leadership of captain Daryl Jayrick O. Valdez. With Engr. Kimpay’s guidance, the team navigated through the challenges with poise and emerged triumphant with a commendable score of 115 points.
In addition to celebrating the achievements of the winning teams, the event also served as a platform to commend the dedication and hard work of all participants. The success of the 30th IDBC would not have been possible without the thorough planning and coordination by SEAHS. Their commitment to promoting academic excellence and fostering a sense of community within SEA and the Louisian community is truly remarkable. The event was further enriched by the presence of esteemed judges, including Engr. Tristan Consolacion, Engr. Alleah Awao, and Engr. Nympha Mae Bulay, whose expertise and guidance added depth and credibility to the competition.
The 30th Inter-Departmental Brain Collision not only celebrated academic excellence but also directly contributed to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 16, along with the CICM advocacy of peace. By promoting a culture of learning and critical thinking among students, the competition promotes SDG 4 (Quality Education) by ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. Additionally, through peaceful competition and collaboration, it nurtures a sense of unity and inclusivity, aligning with SDG 16’s (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) goal of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. This advocacy for peace within the academic community echoes the broader mission of the CICM, further reinforcing the institution’s commitment to building a world characterized by peace, justice, and strong institutions.
As the curtains draw to a close on another exciting edition of the Inter-Departmental Brain Collision, the SEA community stands united in celebration of knowledge, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.
