Representatives of the departments and offices of Saint Louis University (SLU) attended the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) seminar organized by the Human Resources Department (HRD) on 5 April 2024 at the Fr. Francis Gevers Hall, Diego Silang Building, SLU Main Campus.
Mr. Laurence Oliver C. Navalta, Campus Planning, Maintenance, and Security Department (CPMSD) Safety Officer, opened the seminar with his discussion about Occupational Safety, covering topics such as safety precautions, common injuries, and situational hazards in the workplace. Mr. Navalta emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and well-maintained workplace to avoid mishaps. He also encouraged the employees to be prepared and responsive to avoid accidents and safety hazards.
Thereafter, Dr. Hosanna Mae F. Pajela, Head of the Health Services Unit (HSU), together with Dr. Gazel May Monica I. Galuba, School Physician, and Mrs. Cherrie D. Rosario, Clinic Nurse, gave their presentations related to Occupational Health.
Dr. Pajela started with her presentation on “Common Therapy Practices for Work-related Injuries/Illnesses”, followed by Dr. Galuba’s discussion on “The SLU Health Policies: Prioritizing Workplace Health and Safety”, and Mrs. Rosario’s talk on “Emergency Preparedness.” They tackled medical emergency preparedness and safety protocols for common workplace emergencies, illnesses, and injuries. First aid and emergency response procedures were also talked about, debunking common medical and first aid myths, underscoring the need for immediate and proper response in emergencies.
The OSH seminar was conducted in response to the needs analysis conducted by the HR department. The activity aligned with United Nation Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 of Promoting Good Health and Well-Being as well as with CICM Advocacy of Justice and Peace by promoting a sense of responsibility and preparedness.
