On 10 May 2024, Saint Louis University (SLU) reverberated with the echoes of tradition as it joyously celebrated Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan – two cherished Filipino cultural festivities. Held on the university grounds and surrounding community, the event brought together faculty, staff, and students in a colorful display of faith and community spirit.
The Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo commenced with a liturgical prayer presided by Rev. Fr. Emery A. Mwako, CICM, at the Fr. Paul Van Parijs, CICM Events Center SLU Main Campus. The procession of Reynas, a highlight of the celebration, started at the Fr. Paul Van Parijs Events Center, within the SLU grounds. From there, they made their way through the nearby community streets, including T. Alonzo St. and Lower Bonifacio, before returning to the university grounds. The vibrant procession showcased beautifully-adorned participants embodying various Marian figures, accompanied by prayers and hymns.
Further, the inclusion of CFE (Christian Formation Education) classes in the procession highlighted SLU’s holistic approach to education, integrating faith and cultural values into the academic curriculum. By actively involving students in these cultural celebrations, SLU fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation for Filipino traditions among its diverse student body.

Flores de Mayo, or the “Flowers of May,” is a month-long celebration in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It features daily prayers, floral offerings, and processions, culminating in the Santacruzan, a reenactment of Queen Helena’s search for the True Cross.
Santacruzan, derived from the Spanish word “Santa Cruz”, meaning “Holy Cross,” is a grand procession that commemorates Queen Helena’s journey. It is characterized by a parade of beautifully-dressed ladies representing various biblical and historical figures, each symbolizing virtues such as faith, hope, and charity.
By embracing these traditions, Saint Louis University not only preserves cultural identity but also fosters a sense of unity and solidarity among their community members.
Presided by Rev. Fr. Emery A. Mwako, CICM, together with Rev. Fr. Emanuel Enjang Pranatal, CICM, the event ended with another liturgical prayer at the Events Center. Fr. Emery emphasized the importance of Flores de Mayo as it reminds people to be “flowers for others” and offer hope to this changing world.
Thereafter, Dr. Felina P. Espique, the current Reyna Elena, passed the Holy Cross and Hermanidad to the next Hermana and Hermano Mayor from the SLU Basic Education, which was received by Mr. Alejandro P. Pablico, Principal of SLU-BEds.
As the echoes of hymns and prayers fade away, the celebration of Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan at SLU serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of tradition, community, and faith in shaping the fabric of Filipino society. (Article by Rita Lopez, UIO Intern | Photos by EJ Doña)
