In response to Laudato Si Goals 1 (Response to the Cry of the Earth) and 3 (Ecological Economics), aligned with the CICM Advocacies on Justice and Integrity of Creation, and in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Saint Louis University – Basic Education School (SLU BEdS) has successfully harvested its first produce from its Hydroponics Gardening Project. This milestone, achieved on May 31, 2024, was made possible under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, the guidance of Dr. Joselito C. Gutierrez, and the unwavering support of Mr. Alejandro P. Pablico.
The project began as an offshoot of a training workshop conducted by the University in September 2023, in partnership with the University Libraries and American Corner Baguio of the US Embassy. Despite initial challenges such as limited human skill, space, time, and budget, the endeavor has been both exciting and challenging. Every aspect of the process, from germination and solution preparation to harvesting, received meticulous attention. The dedication and committed efforts of the SLU BEdS workforce, particularly the Junior High School-TLE Department under the headship of Dr. Cristina B. Laguyo, turned the project into a reality. Overcoming initial doubts, the team’s willingness and determination transformed a dream into an achievable goal. For the upcoming academic year, the Basic Education School plans to collaborate with the Parent Advisory Council and the Student Council (SANAMA) to expand and strengthen the project. The aim is to engage all stakeholders in achieving a school-wide goal of sustainability and fostering a green revolution. (Cristina B. Laguyo, Phd)
