Saint Louis University (SLU), through Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for a Medical Scholarship Program with Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) through its Executive Director Sebastian C. Quinones and Bloomberry Cultural Foundation, Inc. (BCFI) through its Executive Director Filipina C. Laurena. The MOA signing took place at the Fr. Francis Gevers Hall, SLU Main Campus on 29 July 2024.
“I am confident that the Medical Scholarship Program will be able to attain its objectives, primarily to usher our future medical field professionals toward their dreams. It is also my aspiration that this partnership would even be fruitful in the succeeding years,” remarked Fr.Gilbert as he welcomed the event’s esteemed guests.
Following Fr. Sales’ speech, Dir. Laurena highlighted the importance of their first Medical Scholarship Program. She stressed its role in addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in the Philippines. Dir. Quinones then shared his thoughts on the partnership, describing it as an extraordinary opportunity to support students in need and contribute to the healthcare sector.
In response to these messages, Dr. John Anthony A. Domantay, Dean of the School of Medicine (SOM), expressed immense joy and gratitude towards the program. Ann P. Opiña, PhD, Dean of the School of Nursing, Allied Health, and Biological Sciences (SONAHBS), also conveyed her appreciation to BCFI and PSFI, recognizing the significant impact this scholarship program would have on financially challenged but deserving students.
The Medical Scholarship Program, commencing this Academic Year 2024-2025, will support eight (8) Doctor of Medicine students, (10) Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science students, and (20) Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology students.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for SLU, PSFI, and BCFI, as they work together to cultivate the next generation of healthcare professionals in the Philippines. This aligns with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
Students interested in applying for the scholarship may inquire from the Center for Counseling and Wellness (CCW) and/or the Office of Global Relations and Alumni Affairs (OGRAA).
