Saint Louis University (SLU), through the Office of Global Relations and Alumni Affairs (OGRAA), conducted the General Orientation for its international students at the Fr. Francis Gevers Hall, SLU Main Campus to mark the beginning of the academic year on 30 August 2024.
Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD, University President, welcomed the international students through a video message, highlighting the importance of embracing genuine Louisian identity. Vice President for Academic Affairs Felina Espique, PhD then followed up with opening remarks, acknowledging each country represented by the students in attendance.
Proceeding with the orientation, Mr. Jefferson Adias, Baguio City Representative of the Bureau of Immigration emphasized the differences between a student visa and a special study permit, detailing the requirements for each and how such processes work in the Philippines. Through the question-and-answer portion, these technicalities were discussed even more, providing clarity for the international students.
In the second part of the program, a fireside chat was conducted with OGRAA Director Stephenie Busbus, PhD, Office of Student Affairs and Services Director Triceayn Marie Prestousa, and University Registrar Andrew Macalma, PhD. They addressed the international students’ queries about student affairs, global relations, and registration procedures.
Further, the International Student Association (ISA), a university-wide organization dedicated to fostering a sense of community among SLU international students, held their elections for its new set of officers this academic year. The nominees expressed their commitment to create a supportive environment for their fellow international students.
The General Orientation’s initiative reflects SLU’s mission to unite its diverse student body aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
