Baguio Association of Government Grantees and Scholars – Saint Louis University (BAGGS) is a duly recognized organization of government grantees and scholars in Saint Louis University. The Scholars’ General Orientation (Scholars GO!) was successfully conducted on November 14, 2024 at SIRIB Center, Otto Hahn Building, Saint Louis University, bringing together a diverse group of new and returning scholars to provide them with an overview of the institution’s academic framework, resources, and opportunities. The event aimed to prepare participants for a fulfilling and productive journey as members of our scholarly community.
The Scholars’ General Orientation aimed to equip Louisian scholars with the necessary information on scholarship requirements, policies, and university procedures. It also allows scholars to connect and build a sense of community. To do so, the organization invited resource speakers from different offices, including the Department of Science and Technology – CAR, the Center for Counseling and Wellness and the Office of Finance. Mr. Roston John D. Bonilla, the current Project Technical Assistant IV from Department of Science and Technology — CAR discussed the academic responsibilities and benefits of the DOST Scholars, as well as the opportunities for them especially with regards to their leadership initiatives. The Office of Finance from SLU represented by Mr. Alan Frank B. Silva also answered the queries related to tuition fees and other requirements relevant to the Louisian scholars. Ms. Marie Ellami S. Refuerzo, the Director of Center for Counseling and Wellness, provided comprehensive information on support services to scholars, addressing their mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being, helping the scholars achieve balance, resilience, and overall success in their academic and personal lives.
Scholars were also introduced to extracurricular opportunities, fostering engagement in leadership, community service, and creative pursuits beyond the classroom. Interactive sessions allowed scholars to connect with faculty, peers, and advisors, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. The orientation concluded with closing remarks emphasizing the importance of resilience, curiosity, and integrity in the scholars’ journey. Feedback from participants reflected a positive experience, with many expressing appreciation for the clarity of information and the welcoming atmosphere.
The scholars’ general orientation contributes to the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing new students with essential academic tools and resources to succeed in their educational journey, fostering an inclusive learning environment that ensures all scholars, regardless of background, have access to quality support. It supports SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by promoting equal opportunities for all scholars, celebrating diversity, and offering targeted programs to assist marginalized or underrepresented groups, ensuring that everyone has the chance to thrive academically. Additionally, the orientation aligns with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by encouraging collaboration and community engagement, both within the academic environment and beyond, to foster partnerships that support shared goals and global sustainability. Through these efforts, the orientation activity plays a crucial role in advancing the institution’s commitment to creating a more equitable, inclusive, and collaborative educational experience.
