On 05 November 2024, the School of Engineering and Architecture’s (SEA) Industrial Engineering Department conducted Activities 2 and 3 of Project 1 from their current extension program entitled “Implementing a Comprehensive 5s Life Program (Layout, Information, Five-S, Evacuation Strategies) to Enhance Happy Hallow Barangay’s Safety and Information Programs”. The activities covered disseminating the pre-assessment results from Activity 1, 2S-Set-in-Order Seminar and presenting the recommended layouts to improve workspaces in the barangay. The audience/recipients of the activities are the members of the Happy Hallow Barangay Council.
The importance and methodology of organizing individual and common workspaces were delivered. Meanwhile, the engagement of the barangay council was sought by asking them to relate their current experiences with the knowledge shared by the department. The resource speaker for the 2S Seminar was from the faculty of BS Industrial Engineering (BSIE) Department, Engr. Anthony James Domingo. He has an extensive experience in 5S, being a 5S Champion in the Planning Department in 2017 and Overall Administration 5S Core Member from 2018-2020 at Texas Instruments Philippines, Inc.
The following activities were done during the extension activity:
- Dissemination of pre-assessment results for 5S Practice and Layout Functionality presented by IE student extension team leaders, Nathaniel Modesto and Princes June Abata.
- Conducting of 2S Seminar presented by Engr. Anthony James Domingo.
- Presentation of recommended layouts for the Main floor, Kitchen, Clinic, and Daycare Center by BSIE student extensionists, Princess June Abata, Elijah Balawag, Hazael Barino, Julianne Fangonil, Adrian Galiste, Nico Grad, Reventor Imingan, Robelyn Malla, Hannah Matchoc, Nathaniel Modesto, Sydney Ortiz, Lawrence Quizon, and Angelika Faith Sindanum.
- Selection of Layouts to be implemented in the different workspaces presented by the Happy Hallow Barangay Council .
Prior to the extension activity, the student extension teams demonstrated their problem-solving skills in analyzing the current layouts and workflows and, in effect, came up with three alternative layouts for each of the four areas. The students utilized the methodology of Systematic Layout Planning to arrive at the recommended arrangements. After each presentation, the members of the barangay council were asked to choose their preferred layout to apply in each area. Their comments and suggestions were also considered and will be incorporated into the final designs to be implemented this November.
The Industrial Engineering faculty members: Michelle Adiwang, Maria Lourdes Bibit-Chee, Abegail Tagal, Patrick Franz Pascua, and Mark Emriel Parlan, served as facilitators for the entire extension activity that lasted from 8:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. The overall coordinator for the event was the Extension Program Coordinator (EPC) for IE, Geraldine Nerona.
At the end of the event, Hon. Julia Dangpa, Happy Hallow Barangay council member, expressed their gratitude to the SLU IE Team for all the additional knowledge they gained from the seminar and for the solutions that were recommended by the IE extension team to improve the overall organization, safety, and ambiance of the barangay spaces through the extension program.
