Siglat MinHero: The Saint Louis University (SLU) MinES Safety Week 2025 Outreach Program on 8 February 2025 held at Evelio Javier Memorial National High School brought together students, faculty, and experts to promote and enhance emergency preparedness. Organized by the SLU Mining Engineering Society, this initiative emphasizes hands-on training in life-saving skills, ensuring that young learners gain the confidence and knowledge needed during crises.
The program commenced with a coordinated safety kits distribution, ensuring that each participant received essential supplies for emergency scenarios. Following this, an interactive review of safety kit components was conducted, allowing students to familiarize themselves with each tool and understand its specific use.
A live demonstration of triangular bandage basics formed a core part of the workshop. SLU MinES members, certified in Basic Life Support and First Aid by the Local Government, showcased proper wrapping techniques and explained how to effectively secure injuries using a triangular bandage. To reinforce these skills, a simulation exercise on triangular bandage use was conducted, enabling students to practice the techniques in a controlled, realistic environment. This hands-on practice not only solidified their learning but also enhanced their readiness for real-life situations.
In addition to these activities, the event featured a brief overview of the BSEM program, outlining its commitment to fostering safety and technical excellence in emergency response. This segment provided participants with insight into broader initiatives aimed at continuous improvement in safety education and community resilience.
Beyond teaching practical skills, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility. Its approach to education and community safety naturally supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), while resonating with the core values of CICM Advocacy and CEAP JEEPGY. These principles—fostering justice, peace, ecological integrity, engaged citizenship, poverty alleviation, gender equality, and youth empowerment—are woven into the program’s fabric. This integrated focus not only enhances technical readiness but also inspires a deeper, values-based commitment to caring for our common home, echoing the spirit of Laudato Si.
Collaborative efforts between school faculty and SLU Mines experts ensured smooth execution despite logistical challenges. The enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from both students and educators underscore the success of the event. By combining technical training with core values of social justice and ecological care, the Siglat MinHero: The SLU MinES Safety Week 2025 Outreach Program laid a strong foundation for future community safety initiatives.
