In celebration of Heart Health Awareness Month, the Saint Louis University Health Services Unit (SLU HSU) – Laboratory Elementary Department conducted the “Save a Life, Learn CPR” training program on 27 February 2025, for Grade 4, 5, and 6 learners, teachers, and staff. This initiative was made possible through a partnership with the Philippine Heart Association – Baguio-Benguet Chapter and in collaboration with the Philippine Pediatric Society – Northern Luzon Chapter. Mrs. Lorna E. Lucas, BEdS assistant to the principal for academics, was present to supervise the event together with the BEdS-LED HSU doctors and nurses.
To emphasize the life-saving significance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Dr. Clinton Balud shared his personal testimony on how CPR played a crucial role in saving his life. Dr. Berith Bermejo then introduced the essential 4Cs of Hands-Only CPR: Check responsiveness, Call for help, Cover for protection, and start Compression. Meanwhile, Dr. Rochelle Pamaran, alongside Dr. Dave Padilla and Dr. Justina Calibuso, provided a demonstration on the proper use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Under the supervision and evaluation of Dr. Bernadette Valdez, Dr. Catherine Gomez, Dr. Mary Rose Eunice Gundayao, Dr. Irenea Maria Aragon, Dr. Grace Gallao, and the SLU HSU Medical staff, learners, teachers, and staff actively participated in hands-on CPR exercises using mannequins provided by the association.
The training aimed to equip young Louisians with essential life-saving skills in Hands-Only CPR, empowering them to respond confidently and effectively during emergencies. More than just acquiring a vital skill, the program instilled a deep sense of responsibility, compassion, and community spirit, nurturing a generation of young Louisian lifesavers.
Through initiatives like this, SLU HSU continues to champion the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG No. 3: Good Health and Well-being. This advocacy underscores the institution’s unwavering commitment to promoting health and well-being—not only for its students but also for their families and the broader community. By reinforcing the Louisians’ dedication to creating a safer and healthier society, SLU HSU continues to lead with excellence and purpose. (Article by Maria Kathrina E.
