Upholding its social commitment and responsibility, Saint Louis University (SLU), through its Community Extension and Outreach Office (CEOPO), held Binnadang 2025: Pagkilala, Pasasalamat at Parangal at the Fr. Francis Gevers Hall on 25 April 2025.
“Binnadang” is a Filipino term that speaks of community cooperation rooted in love, compassion and solidarity. True to its meaning, Binnadang 2025 gathered people from all walks of SLU’s extended family to recognize their contributions to community outreach, advocacy, and service. From students to parents, staff to volunteers, and institutional partners, the event highlighted those whose selflessness and collaboration embody the heart of the university’s mission.
The event officially started with a prayer and the singing of Pilipinas kong Mahal led by the Center for Culture and Arts (CCA).

Rev. Fr. Emery E. Mwako, CICM, Vice President for Mission and Identity, then delivered the opening remarks. “Binnadang is more than just working together, it is a way of life that embodies service and the need for one another, especially the marginalized,” he said.

The University President, Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD, through Vice President for Academic Affairs Felina P. Espique, PhD, emphasized on the role of SLU in shaping socially responsible individuals who go beyond academics to touch lives through service. Dr. Espique shared, “Let us continue this spirit of Binnadang, for it is a true collaboration, that we become stronger, more resilient, and more capable of overcoming any challenges that may come our way.”

Binnadang 2025 honored different individuals and groups who have actively participated in community programs. Students, teaching and non-teaching staff, parents, volunteers, and partner institutions were acknowledged for their dedication and commitment.
Cultural intermissions throughout the afternoon brought life and rhythm to the occasion, with traditional dances and musical performances. Each performance was a nod to the rich heritage of the Cordillera region and a celebration of identity and pride.

Director of CEOPO, Ms. Charmaine P. Mendoza, in her closing remarks, thanked all those who made the year’s outreach efforts possible. She called on everyone to continue embracing the value of service — not just as a duty, but as a way of life that builds bridges and strengthens communities. “Service is a way of transforming not only communities, but our hearts,” she remarked.

Binnadang 2025 was not just a celebration; it was a testament to how unity, kindness, and cultural rootedness can shape meaningful change. In every applause, every tribute, and every performance, the message was clear: when people come together in service, they create something truly lasting. This proves that SLU is a living testament to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
Through Binnadang 2025, SLU celebrated unity in diversity, promoted cultural understanding, and emphasized the value of service for the common good. (Article by Faithe Dugay, UIO Intern | Photos by Jaymark Borja, UIO Intern)
