Saint Louis University (SLU) held the opening ceremony of the five-day Internationalization Week on 5 May 2025 at Fr. Theophile Verbist Hall, SLU Main Campus. The event was organized by the Office of Global Relations and Alumni Affairs (OGRAA) and carried the theme, “NAVIgating Global Opportunities through Bridging Cultures, Crossing Horizons, and Celebrating Diversity.”
International students, school administrators, faculty members, SLU exchange students, and advocates of internationalization participated in the celebration, which honored the achievements of students involved in SLU’s international programs.
The program commenced with the SLU prayer and the Philippine National Anthem, followed by the opening message of SLU President, Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD. In his address, he emphasized the university’s commitment to developing globally-engaged citizens through inclusive, intercultural education and partnerships.

Regional Office of CAR Education Supervisor II, Dr. Godfrey G. Mendoza as the representative of CHED CAR Regional Director, Atty. Septon A. Dela Cruz, Career Executive Service Office (CESO) III, also delivered a speech acknowledging the presence of the attendees and emphasizing the importance of diversity and international collaboration in shaping a more interconnected and compassionate global community.

Following the opening message, eleven Thai international students from Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University performed a cultural performance that showcased their pride for their nation. Moreover, their vibrant rendition of “Bahay Kubo” and a lively Tinikling dance captivated the audience and reflected their appreciation of Filipino culture, as well as their experiences in Baguio and the Philippines.
Engaging icebreaker activities, such as Bingo, encouraged participants to socialize and interact with fellow students by finding peers. In just a short time, both international students and Louisians connected, sharing their experiences and accomplishments related to studying abroad.

As the celebration continued, the university honored students for their efforts in advancing internationalization. Certificates, plaques, and medals were awarded to those who participated in various international programs, initiatives, seminars, and study-abroad opportunities. Students were lauded for participating in internships from partner, Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (Samut Prakarn, Thailand), the Universitas Brawijaya Exchange Program in Indonesia, Equify Project Exchange, and those who have completed their on-the-ground media training with Hong Kong-based radio broadcasting network, Metro Broadcast Corporation.
In addition, students who participated in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) International Mobility for Students (AIMS) SEA Program, Southeast Asian (SEA)-Teacher Project and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya CommTECH Nusantara 2025 participants were also recognized.
Louisian students who took part in the prestigious CHED-Icons, an initiative of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) aimed at nurturing globally competitive Filipino youth, were also commended for their involvement.
Certificates of completion were then given to the eleven delegates of Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University (VRU), who visited SLU as part of their involvement in their 2025 English Camp (E-Camp).

The highlight of the afternoon was the awarding of the Most Outstanding International Students in the Philippines, received by three individuals: Sae Yong Chung, Saw Etha Ler, and Kikuo M. Ikusawa, Jr. Their remarkable academic achievements and dedication to international engagement earned them well-deserved recognition during the celebration of internationalization.
In the same manner, five students were also awarded the Academically Outstanding International Students: Ravneet Sohar, Zyan Maravilla, Josh Tsunezumi, Raizel Bahingawan, and Thinley Wangdi, who have stood out for their exceptional performance, determination, and excellence in their studies. In navigating both academic demands and the challenges of being away from home, they have shown remarkable discipline, adaptability, and global-mindedness.
SLU’s English Proficiency students then took the stage with a moving performance of “We Are the World,” delighting the audience and reinforcing the event’s message of unity and global harmony.
In fostering international understanding and cooperation, Internationalization Week aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—specifically Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
