Saint Louis University (SLU) affirmed its commitment as a premier institution in teacher education by hosting the 54th National and 15th International Philippine Association for Teachers and Educators (PAFTE) Convention from 9-10 October 2025 at the Prince Bernhard Gymnasium, SLU Main Campus, Baguio City.
The convention gathered educators, leaders, and key stakeholders in the teaching profession to address the timely theme: “Teacher Education for Sustainable Development: Integrating the SDGs for Teacher and Learner Empowerment.”
The convention began with a formal procession of PAFTE officers and Board of Directors followed by the opening remarks of SLU President, Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD, which was delivered by the Executive Assistant to the SLU President Joselito C. Gutierrez, PhD.
Fr. Sales noted that SLU, a Center of Excellence for Teacher Education, is honored to host the event– an avenue for deepening shared commitment as educators—not just as thought shepherds, but as stewards of Mother Earth.

Brenda B. Corpuz, PhD, PAFTE National President, delivered a warm welcome message to all attendees, emphasizing the importance of the convention as a platform for advancing teacher education aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Corpuz articulated the purpose of the convention as a collaborative effort to empower educators through integrating the SDGs into teaching and learning practices. She also introduced the keynote speakers, highlighting their expertise and roles in shaping educational reforms setting the tone for meaningful discussions and workshops throughout the event.

Rev. Fr. Glenn Paul M. Gomez, SVD Rector of Christ the King Seminary then gave the keynote address titled, “Empowering Teachers to Lead the SDGs Movement” where he underscored the critical role of educators as drivers of sustainable development. Fr. Gomez also discussed integrating ethical and spirituality-based dimensions in education that fosters social responsibility.

Proceeding with the plenary sessions, the key topics discussed included “SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation” by Aime Lynn Barrion-Dupo, PhD, President of Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (BIOTA); and “SDG 4 – Quality Education (Early Childhood)” by Thelma Rabago-Mingoa, PhD, President of the Philippine Research Association for Early Childhood Education (PRAECE).

The afternoon sessions on 9 October were shifted online due to the earthquake that occurred in the morning, ensuring the safety of all participants while maintaining the momentum of discussions and workshops.
On 10 October 2025, the convention continued with the awarding ceremony of PAFTE President Awardees, preserving the tradition of honoring outstanding educational leaders.

By hosting this year’s PAFTE Convention, SLU reinforced its role as a Commission on Higher Education–Teacher Education Council (CHED-TEC)–recognized Center of Excellence, setting the benchmark in quality teacher preparation, curriculum innovation, and educational leadership.
Grounded in inclusivity and Christian values, SLU cultivates a mission-driven environment that prepares graduates to lead effectively in diverse educational settings. Its distinguished members include the SLU Vice President for Academic Affairs, who serves as a Technical Panel Member for Teacher Education under CHED; Dr. Felina P. Espique, PhD, PAFTE National Immediate Past Chair Adviser; and Dr. Terisita D. Ignacio, CAR Regional Secretary—each playing key roles in advancing PAFTE’s mission and programs.
The PAFTE convention strategically aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education), which emphasizes quality and equitable education for all, underscoring SLU’s integral role in national and global education advancement; and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals), showcasing SLU’s collaboration with various educational stakeholders and international partners to strengthen collective efforts in achieving sustainable development through education.
