“Music is the melody whose text is the world.” – Schopenhauer
The Saint Louis University (SLU)– New Louisian Philosophical Society (NEOLOUPHIS) of the Philosophy Department of the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA) was featured and recognized on the official Facebook page of Barangay Lourdes Extension Subdivision, Baguio City for the children’s music and play teaching/tutorial outreach activity conducted on 15 November 2025. The event held was part of the organization’s Project Dunong – an outreach initiative under Project Pilosopo Kuwago that aims to enrich the minds of the youth.

For St. Augustine, music is a powerful means to elevate the soul toward God through divine worship. He famously said, “He who sings, prays twice,” highlighting music’s rational and numerical structure, which creates harmonious proportions reflecting the harmony in all of creation. The session offered a brief introduction to note reading and music theory to spark the children’s interest and build a foundation in music while encouraging creative self-expression. Through interactive discussion, they learned basic concepts like note values, counting, and letter names, enhancing their skills and appreciation. This tutorial activity acts as a stepping stone for children to develop their musical skills, making music a path to deeper spirituality and a connection with the world around them.

Equally important was the activity’s integration of play through badminton, which complemented the tutorial by fostering physical activity, teamwork, and joy. The inclusion of badminton emphasized the holistic value of play in learning—helping children develop discipline, coordination, and social interaction while balancing intellectual and creative growth. By combining music education with play, the activity highlighted that learning is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about nurturing well-being, harmony, and community spirit.

The tutorial/teaching activities were held through the support, participation, and collaboration of the officials of Barangay Lourdes Extension led by Hon. Jeffrey Timanngo, barangay captain and Kagawad Ruther John Narcida; the SLU-Center for Counseling and Wellness, and the SLU Outreach Program Office.

By expanding the learning horizon of the children past the confines of the four walls of the classroom, the skills workshop is an initiative that is aligned with and is aimed at the realization of SDG 4: Quality Education. The project is also seen as a testament of the organization’s commitment towards the realization of the CICM Louisian’s missionary spirit.
