The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and the Data Protection Office (DPO) of Saint Louis University (SLU) conducted a Data Privacy Awareness seminar, “Revisiting the Data Privacy Act of 2012” to the Louisian students on 6 March 2023 at the Diego Silang Building, SLU.
A total of 50 students attended the seminar, where they learned about the Data Privacy Act and their rights as data subjects. Dr. Cecilia A. Mercado, Data Protection Officer, and Assistant Data Protection Officer, Ma. Concepcion Clemente were the speakers for the event.
Dr. Mercado said that the seminar was held to inform student leaders of their responsibilities as “agents of the PIC (Personal Information Controller) who are expected to practice and preserve the law.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Clemente tackled the general provisions and the chapter regarding processing personal information of Republic Act No. 10173 (Data Privacy Act of 2012).
The seminar ended with an open forum where students asked questions about how they can better protect themselves and their peers from cyber harassment.
The Data Privacy Act of 2012 is a Philippine law that protects the right to privacy of individuals in relation to the processing of personal information. The law requires organizations to obtain consent from individuals before collecting or processing their personal information, and to give individuals access to their personal information and the right to have it corrected or deleted.
