The three-day First-Aid Training program “EMergency: Mining Engineering Student’s First-Aid Training” commenced on 2 February 2024, organized and supervised by the SLU Mining Engineering Society (SLU MINES) with the help of City Disaster and Risk Reduction and Management Office of Baguio City (CDRRMMO). The training program was conducted to emphasize the importance and implementation of COVID protocols, essential life survival skills, and basic life support.
The training program included various first aid skills, from basic life support to Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) management and also Two-Man Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques for the first day. The day then culminated in a mass demonstration covering emergency scenarios, including FBAO management and Community CPR.
On the second day, the focus shifted to a comprehensive First Aid overview, covering Emergency Action Principles, Common Medical Emergencies, and Trauma Emergencies. Participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations of bandaging techniques and treatment of various wounds and burns. Patient casualty handling was also practiced, ensuring students could respond effectively in emergencies.
On the final day, they concentrated on immobilization techniques with various sling and splinting methods. All participants showcased their acquired skills through return demonstrations, ensuring proficiency before engaging in a challenging field simulation exercise.
Throughout the program, participants demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to mastering essential first-aid skills crucial for emergency response.
The three-day training program was directed in alignment with the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 3 Promoting Good Health and Well-Being, and Sustainable Development Goal 4. The program also followed the CICM Advocacy of Justice and Peace, fostering a sense of responsibility and preparedness among mining engineering students to contribute positively to society, ensuring safety and well-being for all.
