In celebration of Heart Month, the Rotaract Club of Baguio SLU-School of Medicine holds a hands only CPR Training in partnership with the Philippine Heart Association Baguio-Benguet Chapter on 18 February 2024 at the BENECO Function Hall. This training aimed to empower individuals with the lifesaving skills needed to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.
Under the theme “Strengthening the Community One Heart at a Time,” the event drew 171 participants comprising of health workers from different barangay health centers, barangay officials, and members of the Philippine National Police. This diverse representation underscored the importance of collaboration in promoting community health and safety.
The significance of CPR training cannot be overstated. Hypoxia, or decreased oxygen delivery to the brain, can result in irreversible brain damage within 5-10 minutes of cardiac arrest. Thus, the ability to provide immediate care through CPR can be the difference between life and death. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to perform Hands-Only CPR, this event sought to empower participants to become active participants in saving lives within their communities.
Beyond its immediate impact on community health, this activity also exemplified the values of the CICM in advocating for peace and justice. By immersing with individuals from diverse backgrounds and walks of life, participants not only learned CPR techniques but also fostered bonds of solidarity and cooperation within their communities.
By promoting access to lifesaving skills and fostering community resilience, this initiative aligns with several United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
In conclusion, the hands only CPR Training event organized by the Rotaract Club of Baguio SLU – School of Medicine serves as a shining example of proactive community engagement in promoting health, safety, and solidarity. As we celebrate Heart Month, let us continue to strengthen our communities one heart at a time through education, collaboration, and compassionate action.
