After the Orientation for the School of Law held on 10 August 2024 to kick off the new academic year, Saint Louis University (SLU) held the first day of the second series of General Orientations for first-year and new students on 12 August 2024. The week-long orientation designed to foster a supportive and enriching environment are conducted simultaneously at the Fr. Francis Gevers, CICM Hall, Silang Building and the Fr. Joseph Van den Daelen, CICM, CCA Theater in the SLU Main Campus.
Students from the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) were warmly welcomed by the University President, Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, CICM, PhD through his opening message stating, “We welcome you to Saint Louis University, to Academic Year 2024-2025! We are very delighted to have you all on board. May you enjoy your stay and may you embrace your genuine Louisian identity.”
Following this, the SLU Management team for this academic year was introduced, setting the tone for the university’s leadership and support system that students can rely on throughout their academic journey.
The orientation continued with a series of presentations that introduced students to the core values of SLU and the CICM charism. The Vice President for Mission and Identity (VPMI), Rev. Fr. Emery Mwako Ebumea, CICM, and SLU Parish then provided an overview of the university’s mission, followed by performances from the SLU Rondalla and SLU Concert Orchestra that showcased the vibrant cultural life on campus.
Marie Ellami F. Refuerzo, Director of the Center for Counseling and Wellness (CCW), presented an overview of the essential mental health programs and services available to support students throughout their academic journey. Students were also introduced to the Talged Center, which will formally open its door to Louisians in September 2024. The center is committed to nurturing the growth and development of students and the broader community, providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
Further, critical topics such as safety protocols and data privacy were addressed to ensure that students are well-informed about the university’s commitment to their well-being. The Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) and the Supreme Student Council (SSC) were then introduced, emphasizing the support systems available to students.
A significant highlight of the day was the mental health talk by guest speaker, Mx. Riyan Portuguez, titled “Priming One’s Self for College Thriving.” Mx. Portuguez underscored the importance of cultivating gratitude, understanding one’s self, and practicing self-care as key strategies for thriving in college.
The general orientation for other courses and schools is scheduled to continue on 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 19 of August 2024, ensuring that all incoming students receive a comprehensive introduction to life at SLU. (Article by Rita Lopez, UIO Volunteer | Photos by Antonio Lim, Jr., UIO Volunteer)
