Saint Louis University Center for Culture and the Arts (SLU CCA) once again invigorated the streets of Baguio, proudly representing then Kafagway or the country’s Summer Capital during the Cordillera Festival of Festivals 2024 on October 18, 2024.
Selected by Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI), SLU CCA represented Baguio City, marking the performing group’s remarkable return, having performed in the same festival in 2022. “The Panag-Arem,” the theme of SLU CCA’s performance this year, showcased Baguio City’s profound affection for family, community, and nature. Through their graceful movements accompanied by cultural melodies, the performers communicated a compelling message: akin to how flowers bloom when nurtured, love similarly thrives when shared. Their presentation served as a reminder of the values embodied by Panagbenga Festival: unity, harmony, and a robust connection to nature.
The Cordillera Festival of Festivals serves as a grand convergence of cultural celebrations from various provinces and cities within the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), showcasing each locale’s unique heritage through street dances along Session Road and cultural performances at Malcolm Square.
This year’s event celebrated anew the rich collective heritage and local identity of the provinces and cities within the Region. Aside from CCA’s showcase of Baguio City, other provinces and city in CAR displayed their talents and culture. In Abra, the Kawayan Festival highlighted themes of resiliency and tradition, symbolizing the strength of its people. Apayao showcased the Say-am Naya Apayao, a vibrant representation of gratitude and joy. Benguet presented the Adivay Festival, which embodied community spirit. Kalinga featured its Bodong Festival, promoting peace and harmony among its people. The Kulpi Ad Ifugao from Ifugao expressed a heartfelt plea for protection, while the Lang-ay Festival from the Mountain Province celebrated camaraderie and merriment. Additionally, Tabuk City’s Kopyan Chi Matagoan displayed the vibrant colors of urban living, enriching the festival’s overall tapestry.
Throughout the performances, the SLU CCA Performing Groups reflected the dignity and pride in connection with the Panagbenga legacy of Baguio City, thus contributing to a profound appreciation for the richness of cultures in the Cordillera region.
Representing the city was a privilege and a responsibility, which the SLU CCA welcomed and devoted itself through its world-class performance, personifying the inspiration to pursue the arts and serve as Louisian cultural ambassadors of the City.
