Saint Louis University (SLU) launched its first official campus radio, Cheers SL, on 25 November 2024 in line with the kickoff of the week-long celebration of the University’s 113th Foundation Anniversary Week.
Faculty and staff of SLU were introduced to Cheers SL by SLU BA Communication student-volunteers Emmanuel Gonzales and Alliah Dela Cruz in a live broadcast of the morning rites program via the Cheers SL internet radio platform. The program was aired during the flag ceremony facilitated by the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA) led by STELA Dean Mary Pauline E. Namoca, PhD, RPsy, LPT.
The Cheers SL initiative began after the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) recognized SLU’s potential to establish a campus radio. This vision was brought to life through collaborative efforts from STELA, School of Accountancy, Management, Computing and Information Studies (SAMCIS), and the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA). Working together with the University Information Office (UIO), Technology Management and Development Department (TMDD), and the Campus Planning, Maintenance, and Security Department (CPMSD), a dynamic and interactive space was created for the Louisian community to hear and engage in university-related activities and discussions.
The Web Technologies Class of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) programs created the software during the first semester of the Academic Year 2023-2024, which was then further improved in collaboration with SEA and TMDD. Meanwhile, the content management aspect of the station was led by STELA, particularly the BA Communication program, with the broadcast operations housed at the EduTech Lab (formerly known as Mass Com Lab) in the Waldo Perfecto Building.
Although the first batch of BA Communication volunteers underwent training with Ms. Cristina Chua, it is planned that Cheers SL will eventually be integrated into three major courses of the BA Communication Program next semester to ensure its continuous operations. It would also serve as a practicum for BSIT, Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering (BSECE), and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) students.
After being conceptualized in 2023, Cheers SL is now ready to serve the Louisian community. It will be airing daily from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m and can be accessed exclusively via desktop through the SLU internet network.
