Embracing the dynamic research culture of the university, the Grade 12 students of the Saint Louis University Basic Education School- Senior High from the ABM, HUMSS, and STEM strands presented their research papers in a two-day Research Final Defense at the Navy Base Campus last 12 and 13 January 2023. The 951 onsite and online Senior High students took active participation in this much-anticipated event wherein their Research teachers and other personnel served as the critical panelists.
A plenary session before the defense proper took place at the Gerard Decaestecker Function Hall. Dr. Romeo E. Javier, Assistant to the Principal for Discipline and Student Services, and Mrs. Lorna E. Lucas, Assistant to the Principal for Academics, highlighted the indispensability of research to humanity and the value of perseverance and determination in a student’s academic pursuit.
Mrs. Ruby Catalina P. Bautista, Research Learning Area Coordinator, remarked about the strong foundation in research of the senior high students validated by the awards garnered from national and international paper presentations before and even during the Covid-19 pandemic. She expressed her hopes that Batch 2023 will duplicate or surpass the feat of the previous batches to continue the research legacy of SLU BEdS- Senior High.
Considered the Research Capstone Project of the graduating students, the final defense was a culmination of the SHS students’ Practical Research 3 subject which aims to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the actual conduct of qualitative or quantitative research.
On the other hand, Mr. John Michael Guerzon, the research teacher in the BEdS Junior High School, also successfully led the Grade 10 students in their final research defense. Mrs. Lucas monitored the whole day affair and cited the ability and fluency of the students in defending their works.
Aside from targeting Quality Education (SDG 4), the students’ impressive outputs also covered research works that tackled problems and struggles in the local and national setting together with concrete and commendable solutions that concern Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12). The school aims to create a compendium of all the research outputs of the students and prepare them into full-blown research works
