Exploring the potential of alternative farming in the Philippines, Saint Louis University (SLU) conducted a hands-on training on how to start Hydroponics Gardening. Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, and in partnership with the University Libraries and American Corner Baguio of the US Embassy, 16 faculty members and staff of the university participated in the training last 29 September 2023 at Ungasan, Loakan, Baguio City.
Analyn A. Caroy, faculty of the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA), was the resource speaker of the hands-on training on hydroponics. Caroy discussed the precise components and formula for using the aforementioned technique.
Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions instead of soil. Compared to conventional soil cultivation. This approach leads to faster plant growth due to optimized nutrient availability and there is no need for pesticides if planted in a critical environment. It promotes sustainability for urban farming and vertical farming methods, which reduces environmental impacts of food production by utilizing urban spaces.
As a response to the Laudato Si Goals namely: 1: Response to the Cry of the Earth and 3: Ecological Economics, this training was geared at providing understanding and skills on how to establish urban gardening through Hydroponics. This activity pursued CICM Advocacies on Justice and Integrity of Creation as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No 1: Zero Hunger.
