The MINAunlad seminar, titled “Beyond the Surface – Unearthing Potential Careers in the Mining Industry,” was held on 10 March 2024 at the SIRIB Center, Otto Hahn, SLU Main Campus. The event conducted by the SLU Mining Engineering Society provided a comprehensive exploration of career pathways within the mining sector aimed at students from diverse engineering and architecture programs.
Bringing together students and professionals alike, the program boasted a diverse lineup of speakers, including industry experts, engineers, and representatives from leading mining corporations. The seminar proved to be an enlightening experience for attendees, offering valuable insights into the multifaceted world of mining.
Participants were immersed in sessions throughout the day, delving into various facets of the mining industry. Engr. Marifi Ganaden Lumadeo and Engr. Priscilla Mae Oligario, representing the Helix Mining and Development Corporation and FCF Minerals Corporation respectively, elucidated surface mining practices. Meanwhile, Engr. Lester Mangliwan and Ms. Madona Mangili-Dongiahon from OceanaGold Philippines Inc. – Didipio Mine, shared their expertise on underground mining, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of different mining methodologies.
Beyond technical insights, the seminar highlighted the plethora of career opportunities available for individuals pursuing degrees in engineering disciplines. By bridging the gap between academia and industry, MINAunlad facilitated networking opportunities and camaraderie among participants, fostering collaborations and connections within the sector.
In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), the seminar contributed to equipping graduating engineers with the knowledge and connections necessary to make informed career choices. By addressing misconceptions and myths against the mining industry, MINAunlad also aligns with the CICM advocacy of justice, supporting the livelihoods of at least 200,000 Filipinos employed in the sector. MINAunlad stands as a testament to the importance of education, collaboration, and informed decision-making in shaping the future of the mining sector. (SLU Mining Engineering Society)
