Re-affirming its mark for quality Catholic education, eight (8) National Trainers from Saint Louis University (SLU) Basic Education School (BEdS) attended the four-day 2024 Training of Trainers (TOT) Phase 2 at Lima Park Hotel, Malvar City, Batangas from 14-17 March 2024. Conducted by the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC), the second phase of TOT co-implements the In-Service Training (INSET) under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) program of the Department of Education.
Prior to Phase 2, the Louisian educators attended Phase 1 virtually last 14-16 February 2024 which targeted the comprehension of the Most Essential Topics (METs) as enumerated in the Flexible Instruction Delivery Plan in context with the science of students’ learning. The sessions also focused on teaching the METs based on the science of students’ learning to coach the SHS teacher-participants to do the same.
The SLU BEdS representatives of the different core subject areas of the senior high school curriculum that attended the trainings include Mr. Roy Asignacion (Earth and Life Science), Ms. Evermi Candiao (General Mathematics), Ms. Janice Carbonel (Statistics and Probability) Ms. Lorelynn Castillo (English), Ms. Patricia Oberos (Physical Science), Mrs. Melanie Pugoy (Filipino), Mr. Clint Sawangin (Filipino) and Ms. Mylady Villafuerte (PE and Health).
With the expert supervision of Dr. Gina Montalan, the Consultant of SHS INSET, a total of 157 National Trainers from 39 different institutions were deeply guided through the theme, “Teaching of SHS Core Subjects based on the Science of Students’ Learning”. Every writeshop session ensured that the trainers were prepared to assist senior high school teachers on the different teaching methodologies and the science behind student learning to guarantee alignment of strategies, assessments and readiness of learners through pre and post remediation assessments.
Ms. Doris Ferrer, Executive Director of PEAC, delivered updates to the trainers on PEAC programs and the EDCOM 2 findings regarding the status of Philippine education. These updates validated the direction of the training for Senior High teachers as an urgent and timely response to the needs of the education sector.
Given the high-level preparation, the teacher-trainers are gearing up for the SHS INSET this May to August 2024 across all regions of the country with DepEd and PEAC as the lead agencies. A service meant to deliver quality, sustainability and innovation of the private education sector in support of national development in consonance with SDG 4 – Quality Education. (Mr. Roy Asignacion)
