The Teacher Education Council (TEC), facilitated by the Quality Pre-Service Teacher Education Office of its Secretariat, led the organization of the “Consultation Workshop for Enhancing the Evaluation Process of the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LEPT),” from 24 to 26 April 2024, at the Pages Hall, Baguio Teachers’ Camp, Baguio City, in accordance with the Republic Act No. 7784, as amended by Republic Act No. 11713, also known as the “Excellence in Teacher Education Act”.
Dir. Runvi V. Manguerra discussed about Strengthening Teacher Education as The Collaborative Implementation of RA 11713 by Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) and TEC. He emphasized the purposes of RA 11713 geared towards strengthening teacher education by enhancing the TEC, establishing a scholarship program for students in the teacher education program, and institutionalizing the National Educators Academy of the Philippines. Hon. Jose Y. Cueto, Jr., Commissioner of the Philippine Regulation Commission presented the state of the Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) about their LEPT performance. Concerns were addressed by Commissioner Cueto and he is positive that improvements will be achieved through the strong collaboration between and among PRC, TEC, and TEIs. Dr. Felina P. Espique, Vice President for Academic Affairs of SLU, presented the best practices of SLU – School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts – Teacher Education Programs in sustaining a commendable performance in the LEPT. Dr. Espique reiterated the importance of internal and external benchmarking because improving the LEPT performance of the TEI is a collaborative effort of all stakeholders. Dorothy D. Silva, the Department Head of the Professional Education Department (SLU-STELA) represented the university in this activity.
Over the course of three days, deans of teacher education, program leaders, and LEPT coordinators from both public and private higher education institutions in Luzon participated in the workshop. Its purpose was to formulate a comprehensive framework for intelligent assessment of the LEPT, aiming to generate policy suggestions, conduct research, and develop actionable initiatives facilitating constructive feedback mechanisms for the improvement of the licensure examination performance TEIs with the main goal of producing quality teacher education in the country.
This workshop is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnership for the Goals), along with the CICM advocacy of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation.
