Saint Louis University’s Chemical & Mining Engineering Department marked a milestone as it welcomed representatives from Oceanogold Philippines Inc. (OGPI), Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC), and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) for a momentous ceremony. Held at the Sirib Center in the Otto Hahn Building on 14 November 2023, the event celebrated the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and the conferring of grants, paving the way for a collaborative future that promises to transform the mining industry.
Engr. Caroline Bautista Moncada, SEA’s Associate Dean, set the tone for the gathering, expressing her heartfelt gratitude for the partnership and her unwavering optimism for its impact on the mining industry’s trajectory. She envisioned a future brimming with shared achievements and boundless opportunities.
Echoing this sentiment, Engr. Melissa May Boado, ChE EM Department Head, emphasized the crucial role this partnership will play in solidifying SLU-Engineering Mining’s position as the leading producer of mining engineers in North Luzon.
CBNC Representative Ms. Maan O. Baribar further fueled the enthusiasm with her inspiring words, urging the participants to recognize the Philippines’ wealth of natural resources and the transformative potential of developing them responsibly. She advocated for a shift from mere raw material exportation to value-added processing, emphasizing the importance of innovation and expertise.
Moreover, Representing OGPI, Atty. Joan Catiling applauded the dominance of SLU-trained engineers in the mining industry, highlighting their exceptional skills and unwavering confidence. She expressed her eagerness to continue the partnership, recognizing SLU’s contributions to nurturing a skilled and dedicated workforce.
Engr. Mario A. Ancheta, Regional Director of MGB Region 2, took pride in the accomplishments of SLU’s engineering graduates, proudly showcasing the many Louisian engineers thriving in MGB Region 2 and OGPI. His remarks served as a testament to the university’s reputation for producing top-tier mining professionals.
Capping off the ceremony, Dr. Joselito Gutierez, the Executive Secretary to the President, graciously accepted the partnership on behalf of SLU. He acknowledged the homecoming of Louisian engineers and their commitment to giving back to their alma mater. He also commended the industry’s complementary programs, such as the Development of Mining Technology and Geosciences and Social Development and Management Programs, and expressed gratitude for the partners’ recognition of SLU’s excellence.
The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the memorandum of agreement and the recognition of grantees and beneficiaries.
