Held in Ifugao, the student researchers of Saint Louis University Basic Education School (SLU-BEdS) solidified its commitment to academic excellence at the recent Regional Science and Technology Fair (RSTF) that was held on 7 and 8 December 2023.
Lara Annika Paula E. Namoca emerged as the champion, claiming the top spot in the Life Science Individual Category. Her stellar performance secured a ticket to the National Science and Technology Fair set this March 2024.
Additionally, the team comprising Helena Gicelle B. Abella, Richard W. Guibac Jr., and Bernadine Mikaela C. De Guzman secured second place in the Physical Science Team Category. The researchers were under the guidance of coach Mr. John Michael A. Guerzon.
The event, which brought together schools from across the Cordillera Administrative Region, aimed to cultivate research skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities among students. SLU-BEdS’ success is a testament to the commitment to excellence upheld by both students and faculty.

Faculty Experts propel success of the RSTF 2023
In a collaborative effort, faculty members from the SLU School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts (STELA) contributed their expertise as judges at the RSTF. Dr. Wilfred Bambico and Mr. Philip Julius Nicer evaluated entries in the Physical Science Category, while Mr. John Michael A. Guerzon assessed projects in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines Category. Their role extended to the Science Investigatory Project competition, influencing the selection of the region’s representative for the National Science and Technology Fair.
Prelude to Triumph: SLU-BEdS Excels at Division TUKLAS Science Research Fair 2023 Setting the Stage Victories in the RSTF
The journey to triumph began at the “TUKLAS: Science Research Fair” last 21 November 2023 held at Baguio City High School Gymnasium, where SLU-BEdS students showcased exceptional talent. Lara Annika Paula E. Namoca clinched first place in the Life Science Individual Category. Another notable triumph was achieved by the team of Helena Gicelle B. Abella, Richard W. Guibac Jr., and Bernadine Mikaela C. De Guzman, securing first place as well. This victory granted them the privilege of representing the Division of Baguio City in the RSTF 2023.
Representatives from various public and private schools competed for the chance to be selected as RSTF representatives during the TUKLAS Fair.
The ensemble of victories continued with Erin Shane D. Gumanlaw securing the third place in the Life Science Individual Category, and the dynamic team of Kenzo B. Barrozo, Dorinda Divine C. Malecdan, and Sophia Ysabelle A. Balignasay achieving third place in the Life Science Team Category. Additionally, the team comprising Precious Nicole D. Caranto, Princess Danielle L. Gualberto, and Aeon Rhayne Mari G. Dallindin emerged as finalists in the Life Science Team Category.
This event SLU BEdS feat also takes a significant stride towards addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by highlighting the profound impact of SLU-BEdS’ culture of research on sustainable practices. With an emphasis on cultivating a research-centric environment, the students’ projects underscore the intersection of academia and sustainability.
By delving into research areas such as sustainable agriculture, the utilization of organic wastes, and the preservation of biodiversity, these projects align directly with SDGs related to Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Life on Land (SDG 15).
The culture of research at SLU-BEdS not only fosters academic excellence but also propels the institution towards contributing meaningfully to global sustainability efforts, fostering a generation of students actively engaged in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
