From the four walls of the classroom to the real realm of Chemical Engineering in a mining industry, 10 students from Saint Louis University (SLU) attended the educational plant tour at Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company (LCMC) in Mankayan, Benguet on 16 July 2023.
The student attendees are currently enrolled in the ChE 4131L Chemical Engineering Laboratory 2, a course that covers the different unit operations commonly used in a mining industry specifically on ore milling.
Engr. Katelyn Gabon, Engr. Jonalyn Kimpay, and Engr. Benedict Marzan, the faculty in charge of the aforementioned course, accompanied the students during the plant tour. Headed by a Chemical Engineering alumna of SLU, Engr. Joann Gatchalian, the LCMC staff and operators welcomed them to the plant.
With the guidance of the engineers per area and assistance of their safety officer, the students were able to immerse themselves in the physical and chemical processes done in the mining industry. The SLU alumni of LCMC provided the students a real-word context outside their classrooms.
